Bird Year-End Lookback: Stories that Defined Micromobility in 2021

There have been a handful of events throughout 2021 that have helped not only define the global micromobility industry but shape its future as well.

From safety and sustainability innovations to revolutionary partnerships and integrations, here are some of the most memorable micro-EV moments from the past 12 months.

Bird Three: Redefining Scooter Safety and Sustainability

When the all new Bird Three launched in May, it helped change our understanding of what a shared micro-electric vehicle could be.

Equipped with the industry’s most protected IP68-rated battery with a capacity of up to 1 kWh, its longest and most stable footboard, Bird’s distinctive advanced diagnostics and onboard sensor system (including Smart Sidewalk Protection) and a host of other safety and sustainability features, Bird Three has been expertly crafted to keep riders safe, cities clean and carbon emissions as low as possible.

Bird Smart Bikeshare: Redefining Multimodal Mobility

Bird’s Smart Bikeshare Program, launched in June, helped redefine shared multimodal mobility in cities.

The program introduced the industry’s first and still only combination of shared Bird Bikes plus integrations with local bike share and shared e-moped providers. This unique approach to bikesharing allows us to service the needs of more riders while supporting local businesses and service providers, and cities have taken notice with new integrations and bikeshare launches taking place across the US and Europe throughout the year.

Bird Bike: Expanding the Reach of Micromobility

In August, as global demand for consumer e-bikes continued its climb to record levels, we took another major step into multimodality with the launch of the retail Bird Bike.

Featuring a Bafang electric motor that delivers up to 50 miles (80 km) of range, a removable 36v battery for easy charging, a chainless Gates Carbon drivetrain, a fully integrated backlit handlebar dash display and much more, Bird Bike offers riders everything they need not only to make the switch from gas-powered cars to micro-electric mobility, but to make everyday cycling a joy.

Bird and Scootaround: Redefining On-Demand Accessible Mobility

July’s collaboration between Bird and Scootaround marked a defining moment for on-demand accessible mobility.

The first-of-its-kind program allows those in the disability community to find, reserve and pay for a variety of accessible vehicle types using a custom rider interface available only in the Bird app. As a part of the program, Bird offers exclusive pricing discounts and access to unique Bird accessible vehicles including the WHILL Model Ci2.

Looking Ahead to 2022

All of these important moments helped move micromobility forward throughout 2021, a year when Bird became the first shared micro-EV company to list publicly on the New York Stock Exchange

As we look ahead to 2022, we’re incredibly grateful to our global community of riders, fleet managers and partner cities for your trust, support and collaboration throughout another unprecedented and industry-defining year. The entire Bird team is fully committed to and singularly focused on our mission of providing eco-friendly transportation for everyone.
