Munich, the capital of Bavaria is thriving with a diverse food scene, cultural influences, and impressive architecture. A cosmopolitan city rich with history, Munich embraces its traditions and heritage. This city is a definite must-visit.
This wouldn’t be a true guide to Munich if we failed to mention one of the most talked-about and memorable events unique to Munich…. Oktoberfest. An experience unlike anything else, Oktoberfest spans from September 21 – October 6. Visit the Theresienwiese fairground for rides, beer tents, live music and so much more. Come with your family and friends (lederhosen expected) and as always, please Bird responsibly.
While you’re in Munich, a traditional Bavarian meal is a must. Visit Augustiner-Keller for schnitzel, schweinshaxe and kaiserschmarrn! With live music and seating for 3,000, this traditional hall is one of a kind. Prost!
The buzzing main square Marienplatz is a must for your list! Located in Munich’s city center, it has been a staple since 1158. Today, this still exists with shops and markets filled with residents and visitors alike. Visit during December and experience the Christmas market adorned with lights, traditional food and drink, it is a festive occasion for all.
For sports fans, a visit to Allianz Arena arena will definitely excite. Home of Bayern Munich, the arena’s outside walls light up (300,000 LED lights) depending on the host team. Book a tour through the arena to get a behind the scenes look at the player’s tunnel, locker rooms and more.
For an incredible art experience, visit the Lenbachhaus. A villa style building surrounded by gardens, this museum specializes in Munich artists and houses an impressive amount of contemporary art. In 2013, an additional wing designed with modern architecture was added, expanding the Lenbachhaus.
Street art – but don’t expect to spot it easily. Munich’s street art is immersed in their everyday life so be prepared to work for it. Keep your eyes peeled as you walk through the city and you’ll be rewarded with sophisticated and colorful art hidden in tunnels and alleyways.
Travel like a local
With public transport as excellent (clean and efficient) as Munich’s, it’s an easy no brainer. Most of central Munich is walkable but with bike lanes everywhere, there’s no better reason to hop on a Bird and #EnjoyTheRide from a different vantage point.
Welcome to the Birdlife, Munich.
