It’s a big day for sustainable transportation in Italy.
Trenitalia and Bird, the country’s primary train and micromobility operators, have paired up to help riders complete intercity trips in a convenient, eco-friendly way. The partnership exemplifies the constant, innovative approach being taken to curb pollution and promote more sustainable mobility alternatives in Italy.
“Environmental sustainability is one of the values that guides Trenitalia and the entire FS Italiane Group,” said Paolo Attanasio, Director of Trenitalia’s Long Haul Passenger Division. “For those who choose to travel by train, we offer the possibility to start or continue your journey with sustainable means such as scooters. The partnership with Bird helps meet the needs of our passengers by offering them a comfortable and sustainable journey from the first to the last mile.”
Bird scooters, which already operate in cities including Roma, Milano, Torino, Firenze, Palermo, Verona, Rimini, Pesaro, Collegno, and Aprilia, will be deployed near train stations and in city centers with exclusive benefits to ensure that Trenitalia riders’ first- and last-mile needs are met. Trenitalia customers who are new to Bird will be able to receive two free 15-minute rides, while Cartafreccia loyalty members will benefit from even more savings:
- CartaFRECCIA Argento members will receive 4 free unlocks per month
- CartaFRECCIA Oro members will receive 20 free unlocks per month
- CartaFRECCIA Platino members will receive 40 free unlocks per month

Joining forces with Italy’s leading train operator allows us to do that in a way that’s forward thinking and meets the mobility needs of riders throughout the country.”
According to Italian environmentalist group Legambiente, two-wheeled trips were up nearly 30% by late summer of 2020 when compared to the same period in 2019, with thousands of new kilometers of bike and scooter paths scheduled in the wake of the pandemic.
The partnership between Bird and Trenitalia comes shortly after our announcement that we offset all of the GHG emissions associated with our scooters in 2020. This includes all emissions from our operations, as well as our best estimates for those linked to manufacturing, shipping and recycling. It also marks the second multimodal collaboration with a major national European rail operator since the beginning of the year.
