As New Yorkers await the much-anticipated arrival of its shared e-scooter program, it’s critical that operators begin educating residents about this new, safe and sustainable mode of micro-EV technology.
This is particularly true in neighborhoods like the Rockaways, the Central Bronx and Staten Island’s north shore that have historically been the last to benefit from new transit technologies.
Bird has been deeply committed to working with the City and key local stakeholders to bring clean, affordable mobility to underserved areas of New York since our first outreach program in Bed-Stuy in 2018. More recently, we’ve partnered with local community groups and elected officials on a series of safety demonstrations and helmet giveaways designed to prepare city residents for the arrival of e-scooters.
The Bronx
In the Bronx, we held a safety event with State Assembly Member Nathalia Fernandez and local community groups including the Mid-Bronx Desperadoes and alternative transportation advocacy group Blood, Sweat and Gears.
Staten Island
In Staten Island, Bird worked with the Urban Fairies of Staten Island, the Staten Island Jamaican Association and The Muslim Sisters of Staten Island to offer free helmets to community members.
Queens
In the Rockaways, Bird and Assembly Member Khaleel Anderson came together for a test ride and helmet distribution with tenants from the Beach 41st Street NYCHA Houses.
At each event, attendees are given a free helmet and the opportunity to test ride Bird’s latest e-scooter, the Bird Two, learning how to safely handle the vehicle in a closed, protected course.
As the only e-scooter provider currently operating in New York, it’s our responsibility to help New Yorkers feel safe using this new, affordable mode of transportation starting on day one. We’ll continue to work hand in hand with city and community leaders to educate as many new riders as possible.
